What Is a Countertop Seam?

What is a Seam?

A seam is the connection between two countertop pieces, typically to make one solid surface.

Will My Stone Need a Seam?

Seams are necessary for many reasons:

  • The countertop does not fit through the doorway to the space, or cannot be rotated once inside the room.
  • Moving the slab as one piece would endanger the walls/flooring or harm the installation crew.
  • The length of the desired countertop exceeds the length of a slab.
  • Different edge profiles require joining multiple pieces of stone.
  • “Trapped piece” projects without open edges, such as a sink in an alcove, which utilize seams to prevent damage.

Whenever a seam becomes necessary, TNT takes careful measurements and designs the seam for the best possible spot. This decision is based on stone structure as well as minimalization, which means accounting for vein matching, color similarity, and levelness.

Visibility

Some clients choose darker colored stone with busier patterns to help camouflage seams, while others decide on larger available slabs to reduce the overall required seams. We even have some clients who say seams add uniqueness and personality! Although at least a hint of the seam will always be seen by those who know where to look, the TNT Team employs skill, experience, and technology to strategically place, as well as finish out, any seams your countertop requires.
